Is The Base a real sheepskin rug?

Yes. The Base is genuine fleece-on-hide from Australian Merino sheep — a dense shorn pile of approximately 2–3cm still attached to the natural hide it grew from. To tell any real sheepskin from a fake, part the pile and look at the base: real fleece grows from a suede-like natural hide, while imitations are synthetic fibres stitched into woven fabric.

What does fleece-on-hide mean?

Fleece-on-hide means the wool is still attached to the hide it grew from — a genuine sheepskin, not wool tufted or woven into a manufactured backing. The Base is constructed from panels of Australian Merino fleece-on-hide, carefully joined and stitched to reach Queen and King sizes; single hides don't come that large.

How do I clean a Merino sheepskin rug or underlay?

Shake it out regularly, air it in shade, and vacuum with suction only — never a rotating brush head. Blot spills immediately, then spot-clean with cold water and wool detergent. Do not machine wash or tumble dry: heat damages the hide, and washing strips lanolin, the wool's natural protective wax. Dry away from direct sun and heat, and restore the pile with a wide-toothed brush.

Do sheepskin rugs shed?

A few loose fibres in the first weeks is normal for any natural wool piece. Because the wool in The Base is attached to hide rather than tufted into a backing, it does not shed the way pieced, glued or synthetic-backed rugs do — there is no backing for fibres to pull free from.

Can The Base be used on a bed as well as the floor?

Yes. Laid over your mattress with a fitted sheet on top, The Base becomes a wool underlay: a full 2–3cm of Merino fleece beneath you. Unlike a mattress topper, where wool is tufted into a fabric pad, the fleece-on-hide pile cannot separate from its backing. Many owners rotate seasonally — underlay through winter, floor rug the rest of the year.

How long does a wool rug or underlay last?

Decades, with basic care. Wool underlays are commonly cited at ten to twenty years, well beyond foam and synthetic alternatives, and hide-backed pieces last longest of all — there is no glued or tufted backing to fail, and wool fibres recover their shape rather than crushing flat.

In Australian industry convention, quilts around 250gsm are sold as summer weight, 300–400gsm as all-season weight, and 450gsm and above as winter weight. LAYER Quilt (Doona) carries 350gsm of 100% Australian Merino wool fill. If a quilt doesn't state its GSM, you can't compare it with anything.

350gsm of 100% Australian Merino wool — nothing blended, nothing synthetic. The shell is ivory cotton sateen. A wool quilt label should tell you three things: fill fibre and percentage, fill weight in GSM, and shell composition. If any of the three is missing, ask why.

Clamshell (dome) stitching sews the fill into a repeating pattern of closed pockets, holding the wool evenly in place across the whole quilt. Stitching is what stops fill migrating to the edges and leaving thin patches over years of use. It's the difference between a quilt that stays even and one that needs shaking back into shape.
